San Cristobal de La Laguna
Tenerife | GPS: 28.4874009, -16.3159061San Cristobal de La Laguna, usually shortened to La Laguna, is the most beautiful historic city in Tenerife and one of the most rewarding urban stops in the Canary Islands. Its planned 16th-century street grid, painted facades, inner courtyards and carved wooden balconies give the centre a rare sense of continuity.
But La Laguna is not a frozen heritage set piece. It is also a university city with busy bars, independent shops, strong local-food credentials and a lived-in rhythm that keeps the old town feeling active after dark. That balance between history and everyday life is what makes it such an easy place to enjoy.
Why visit
Come for architecture, churches, courtyards, museums and long walks through one of Tenerife’s richest historic cores. It is also one of the island’s best places for slow evenings - wine bars, plaza terraces and a younger nightlife scene give it more momentum than many heritage towns.
Beyond the old town
La Laguna is more than its UNESCO centre. It is a practical base for the Anaga mountains, the natural pools and surfy north coast around Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo, and quick tram trips to Santa Cruz. If you want a trip that mixes city time with hikes and sea swims, few Tenerife bases are better.
Practical notes
The old centre is best explored on foot. Parking can be awkward, so public transport is often easier than driving in. La Laguna suits travelers who want history, atmosphere and food more than beach-hotel convenience, and it is one of the easiest places on the island to turn a short visit into a much longer stay.
