El Medano

El Medano, Tenerife, Canary Islands

El Medano feels different from the rest of the resort south. It is lower-rise, breezier, more independent in spirit and much more tied to the sea as an active place rather than just a sunbathing backdrop. For many travelers, it is the south coast at its most relaxed and likeable.

The town is especially well known for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the long beach, open bay and constant movement on the water give it a sporty atmosphere. At the same time, the centre stays easygoing, with a square, cafes and a more local rhythm than the larger resort strips.

Why go

Come to El Medano for beach days with a sense of space, active water sports and a stripped-back town feel. It is one of the best choices in Tenerife if you want warm weather and a lively waterfront without committing to a big resort zone.

The landscape

Montana Roja gives the coastline a strong volcanic identity, and the beaches around town feel wilder than those in the west. The wind is part of the appeal for some travelers and a drawback for others, so it is worth choosing El Medano because you like that energy, not in spite of it.

Practical notes

El Medano suits surfers, kitesurfers, walkers and travelers who prefer independent cafes and a casual local feel. If you want sheltered resort beaches and polished hotel infrastructure, Costa Adeje is the better fit. If you want movement, sea air and a more low-key south, El Medano is hard to beat.
