Pico Viejo
Tenerife | GPS: 28.2622222, -16.6727778Pico Viejo is the great neighboring bulk beside Teide, and it helps explain why the national park feels so immense. It is not as famous as the main summit, but it plays a big role in the drama of the landscape, especially when seen from the upper cable-car area or from western viewpoints in the park.
For many visitors, the easiest way to appreciate it is not by climbing it but by looking across to its crater from the Mirador Pico Viejo trail near the upper station. Stronger hikers can go much further and treat it as part of a serious high-altitude route.
Why go
Pico Viejo matters if you want more than the standard Teide photo stop. It gives depth to the volcanic story of the park and rewards people who like geology, longer hikes or less obvious viewpoints.
Practical notes
This is a more demanding proposition than a simple cable-car outing. Even when approached from above, altitude and weather shape the experience, so keep expectations realistic and treat it as mountain terrain.
